Ultrastructure of hAM differs between placental and reflected region. Epithelial cells of placental hAM display predominantly a columnar appearance covered with microvilli. Gaps between the cells are visible. Reflected hAM-derived epithelial cells are cuboidal and exhibit regular cell morphology, microvilli and longer cell protrusions (arrow) and are present at a high density covering the basal membrane. In this subregion of hAM, secretory vesicles are abundant.
