Simplified example of a cyclopean stimulus. The images are both ‘random chessboards’, near-identical apart from the region c3–f5. The 3×3 patch c3–e5 in the right eye's image (A) corresponds to the 3×3 patch d3–f5 in the left eye's image (B), i.e. this region has been shifted one square horizontally. Nothing identifies this patch as ‘special’ in either eye's image individually. If this image is viewed with the eyes crossed so that each eye views the image labelled for it, it is possible to see this patch floating in front of the page, although the percept is not compelling with the simple 8×8 chessboard used here for clarity.
