IMCL accumulation in type 1 fibers inversely correlates with insulin sensitivity. Here, the decline in insulin sensitivity correlates inversely with change in area stained by IMCL after adjustment for percent distribution of type 1 fibers (adjusted LAI). Only data from the University of Pittsburgh (n = 26) is presented, as the crossover study design (lipid vs. glycerol infusion) enabled the direct comparison of IMCL accumulation on insulin sensitivity within the same subject.
