US county centroids tend to be least representative of average county climate in the mountainous and large counties of the western USA. To develop this figure, a principle component analysis (PCA) was performed within the contiguous USA on 19 normalized bioclimatic variables derived from 30‐arcsecond PRISM data (see Methods section). Each component was weighted by the eigenvalue of the PCA to develop an overall climate metric, and the difference between the centroid value and the average value across the county is shown
