TFR cells are highly permissive to R5-tropic HIV ex vivo. Tonsils were disaggregated and spinoculated with virus at room temperature for 2 h and cultured for 48 h. Productive infection of the following viruses is shown: R5-tropic GFP reporter virus (A), CH58 transmitted/founder virus (B), CH470 transmitted/founder virus (C), and CH40 transmitted/founder virus (D). MFI values and the percentages of GFP+ and p24 Ag+ cells were determined, as indicated. Statistical significance was determined using repeated-measures one-way ANOVA. *, P < 0.05; **, P < 0.01; ***, P < 0.001; ****, P < 0.0001; ns, not significant.
