The red box includes cephalochordate proteins, including 3 closely related species of Branchiostoma (B. lanceolatum, B. floridae and B. belcheri), plus Asymmetron lucayanum. The blue box contains two ascidian species, Ciona intestinalis and Ciona savignyi. Vertebrate NOS, represented here by Homo sapiens, are highlighted by the yellow box. The NOS protein of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus (Ambulacraria) was used as an outgroup.
