Standard deviation values were generated by mothur after multiple resampling of the OTU abundance values in order to normalize the data in order to have equal number of sequences in each library.
Different uppercase letters next to the station names indicate significant differences between groups of stations (as in Fig. 2a) as obtained using the ANOSIM R statistic (Fig. S2).
