Average (grand) height changes observed on seven gypsum crystals when no tall cleavage steps are observed during the experiment. The reported rate is the mean slope of the seven data sets obtained by linear regression, and the reported variability is the standard deviation of the mean slope. The uncertainty in the individual measurements is characterized as the temporal standard deviation of the measurement on a single pixel, 2nm.
