Salt sensitivity assay. a The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and maximum tolerance concentration (MTC) values for the different Frankia strains exposed to salt (NaCl) and osmotic stress (imposed by sucrose treatment) under nitrogen-sufficient (NH4Cl) conditions. For Casuarina isolates (left of the bar graph), the MIC and MTC values are expressed as the average values calculated from the dry weight and the BCA protein assays. For the non-Casuarina isolates (DC12, ACN14a, and EuI1c), only the dry weight measurements were used to determine the MIC and the MTC values as natural pigments produced by these strains interfered with the BCA protein assay. b The MIC and MTC values for salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive Casuarina isolates under nitrogen-deficient (N2) conditions
