Bax-mediated growth inhibition is modulated by hexadecenal levels. (a) External hexadecenal potentiates Bax function. Human proapoptotic Bax and antiapoptotic Bcl-xL were expressed under control of the Tetoff promoter for the indicated times in the presence or not of the indicated hexadecenal concentrations. Control strains contained the respective empty vectors. Colony formation was then assessed on YPD agar plates. (b) Bax inhibition is enhanced in hfd1Δ mutants. Human Bax expression was induced for 24 h in the indicated yeast strains by the removal of doxycycline.
