Abbreviations: NGS, next-generation sequencing; OTU, Operational Taxonomic Unit; qPCR, quantitative PCR. For the ‘Ca. Mmc. intestinalis’/Mmc. luminyensis OTU, ‘Mint’ was underlined when the sequences were identical or closer to ‘Ca. Mmc. intestinalis’ than Mmc. luminyensis.

a

Named Mx-01.

b

Mx-05 in this early study.

c

Presence of Mmc. luminyensis was determined with primers and probe having only one mismatch with ‘Ca. Mmc. intestinalis’. Mint, ‘Ca. Mmc. intestinalis’ Mlum, Mmc. luminyensis; Malv, ‘Ca. Mmp. alvus’. Presence of ‘Ca. Mmc. intestinalis’ in Scanlan et al. (2008) and Mihajlovski et al. (2010) was inferred by identification of mcrA sequences having >99% nucleotide identity with the mcrA sequence of this species.
