Alternative views of the genotype. Inherent to the Modern Synthesis is a deterministic model of phenotypic expression (above) in which the genotype is seen as a self-contained, internal developmental programme. By contrast, a model that recognizes developmental plasticity (below) views the genotype as a developmental repertoire of varying, environmentally context-dependent outcomes. (Modified from [19].)
