PMNs are polymorphic nuclear cells, i.e. granulocytes; phagocytic cells include macrophages and monocyte-derived giant cells; non-phagocytic cells include lymphocytes, plasma cells and mast cells. Cells were scored as absent (score 0), scarcely present (score 1), present (score 2), and abundantly present (score 3). A t-test was used to determine significant differences (P<0.05): *P<0.05 and **P<0.01.
