The peribronchiolar region of the lung shows no neutrophils and limited macrophages in controls (A) and mice exposed to China PM (B), In contrast, neutrophils were observed in the peribronchiolar region of mice exposed to Sacramento PM (C, D). Please note a visible thickening and vacuolization of the airway epithelium following exposure to Sacramento PM (C,D) in contrast to the airway epithelium of the sham controls and mice exposed to China PM (A, B).
