Fleas inside a capsule on a pelt from a burrowing owl nestling. To simulate a scenario in which fleas infest a vertebrate host but do not feed on it, unfed Xenopsylla cheopis were secured on owl or mouse pelts in capsules with screw-top lids (not pictured) for a 1-h exposure period. Fleas were subsequently tested using our bloodmeal assay to determine if the assay would detect vertebrate DNA.
