Schematic illustration of GluR-GluK-mediated glutamate sensing and uptake in S. coelicolor. Upon receiving the glutamate signal, HK is activated by autophosphorylation and the phosphoryl group is then transferred to GluR. Activated GluR binds to the gluABCD promoter region, resulting in upregulation of gluABCD transcription and thus facilitating glutamate uptake. In addition, GluR-GluK also plays an important role in bacterial growth and secondary metabolism in S. coelicolor.
