Comparison of results from qRT-PCR and microarrays for ten randomly selected genes significantly modulated by acute nicotine treatment. The mRNA expression of these genes was measured by qRT-PCR in SH-SY5Y cells either treated or untreated with nicotine for 1 h. Of the ten genes verified by real-time RT-PCR, eight showed significant changes in response to nicotine (p < 0.05), and the other two showed alteration in the same direction as detected with the microarray approach, although the changes did not reach significance. Data are presented as the mean ± SD (n = 5) for both microarray and qRT-PCR experiments
