Typical variation of the nominal stress with stretch for skin specimens for the first loading, the preconditioned response and loading up to failure. Phases 1 through 4 are identified in the preconditioned response. The maximum stress σmax occurs at a stretch λmax that corresponds to the maximum possible stretch without generating permanent damage.
