Measurements of developing jaws. (A) Alizarin red-stained mandibles of the mouse and the vole. The buccolingual widths of the developing dental crypts are in Table S3. (Scale bar, 1 mm.) (B) Total width of the developing buccal and lingual jaw bone (yellow) relative to the corresponding tooth width (blue) in the mouse and gerbil (M. unguiculatus) that lack pronounced cusp offset (mean, 5.8 and 6.1 degrees, respectively), and in the vole and hamster (M. auratus) that have more pronounced cusp offset (mean, 17.3 and 13.6 degrees, respectively; n = 3 for all four species). Measurements were taken from microCT scans at the midpoint anteroposteriorly. Stages measured were for mouse E15 (n = 1) and E16 (n = 3), for gerbil E20.5 (n = 2) and E21 (n = 3), for vole E15 (n = 3) and E16 (n = 3), and for hamster E13 (n = 4) and E14 (n = 3). Boxes enclose 50% of observations; the median and mean are indicated with a horizontal bar and circle, respectively, and whiskers denote range.
