Disrupting the apical junction by EGTA increases GC transmigration. Polarized HEC-1-B cells were pre-treated with or without EGTA (5 mM) apically and basally for 10 min. Cells were then washed and inoculated with GC for 6 h. The basal medium was collected and plated to determine the transmigrated GC (A). Cells were washed, incubated with gentamicin and lysed, and the bacteria collected and plated to determine invaded GC (B).
