Bruce White qualified at University College Hospital before joining the Public Health Laboratory Service. After serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps he trained as a virologist at the Virus Reference Laboratory, Colindale. Virology was an exciting and emerging science in the 1950s, and in 1957 Bruce White moved to the Public Health Laboratory at Liverpool to set up the virology service. When time permitted he took great pleasure in investigating his family history. He leaves a wife, Muriel, and a daughter.
