Historical timeline of vaccine candidate discovery for antigens under evaluation in clinical trials. Only 22 of the > 5400 proteins encoded in the Plasmodium falciparum genome are under evaluation in clinical trials. The majority of these were discovered in the pre‐genomic era. As illustrated for circumsporozoite protein, multiple trials for the same antigen have been conducted using different platforms and adjuvants, and in combination with a small number of other well‐studied parasite antigens.
