HIV-1 capsid assembly. The capsid protein comprises N (green) and C (red) terminal domains (top right).176 The N-terminal domains associate to form either pentamers166 (middle right with N-terminal domains in blue) or hexamers169 (bottom right with N-terminal domains in green) which assemble via the C-terminal domain dimers to form a cone comprising ~250 hexamers and exactly 12 pentamers (left).166 Adapted from Deshmukh et al.147
