Although statistical models reflect multilevel data, for illustration purposes a single point is plotted for each patient participant. The x-axis represents the difference between patients’ ratings of their two clinicians (left graph) or the difference between clinicians’ ratings of the patient (center and right graphs). The y-axis represents the difference in patients’ average pain intensity ratings between their two clinicians. The higher patients rated their feelings of similarity and trust (single composite measure) toward their clinicians, the lower they rated pain intensity (left graph). In contrast, clinicians’ ratings of patients did not affect patient pain (center and right graphs). Shaded bands are standard error.
