The vertical (horizontal) cut blocked transverse signal propagation in deep layers, suggesting that transverse excitation in deep layers is conveyed mainly by the intrinsic connections within those layers. B: Horizontal plane. Transversely propagating signals in deep layers proceeded beyond the vertical (coronal) cut and continued to travel further, suggesting that they are attributed to transverse neural connections within superficial layers.
