Schematic representation of experimental protocol. Male and female Wistar rats were mated and after confirming the pregnancy through the presence of spermatozoa in the vaginal smear, the pregnant rats (GD1) were randomly treated or not with distillated water supplemented with 0.6 mg/L or 7.3 mg/L NaI during pregnancy and lactation periods. At post-natal day 21 (PND21) the rat dams were anesthetized and killed by decapitation and several tissues were collected for performing molecular and biochemical analysis.
