AIF1 was exclusively expressed in macrophages in HCC. (A) AIF1 positive cells were abundant in the adjacent peritumoral area of HCC ( × 25). The expression of AIF1 was significantly higher in adjacent liver tissue than within the tumor tissue (from 206 HCC patients), also than within normal liver tissue (from 20 HCC patients) ( × 200). (B) Immunofluorescence confocal analysis of HCC showed that AIF1 was co-expressed with CD68 within the intratumual and peritumoral microenvironment. The scale bar indicates a length of 100 μm. (C) Western blot showed that AIF1 was specifically expressed in various macrophage cell lines but not in liver cells, liver cancer cells, endothelial cells and astrocytes; *p < 0.05.
