Table 1.
Root medium | Hydraulic conductivity, Lpr (10–8 m s–1 MPa–1) |
HY:OS ratio | |
---|---|---|---|
Hydrostatic (HY) | Osmotic (OS) | ||
Well-stirred (WS) | 9·4 ± 3·1 (n = 15)a | 9·5 ± 3·7 (n = 15)a | 1·1 ± 0·3 |
Unstirred (US) | 9·7 ± 4·2 (n = 6)a | 4·2 ± 2·6 (n = 6)b | 2·6 ± 0·8 |
WS/US ratio | 1·0 ± 0·1 | 2·4 ± 0·9 |
Hydrostatic and osmotic Lpr were measured either rapidly stirring (well-stirred) or without stirring (unstirred) the root medium. Osmotic Lpr was measured by replacing the external nutrient solution by 59 mOsmol kg–1 NaCl in the nutrient solution.
Values given are means ± s.d. and the numbers of measured roots are in parentheses. Different letters indicate significant differences at the P < 0·05 level.
