The phagosome escape deficient mutant SCHU S4 ΔfevR fails to induce macrophage death despite C3 opsonization. MDM were infected with WT SCHU S4 or the mutant strains in the presence of HS or C3-depleted HS. The MOIs were as follows: WT, 87; ΔfevR strain, 86; ΔfevR/pfevR strain, 96.
