Roles of ARS2 in suppressing pervasive RNA production as described in this paper. (A) ARS2 and ZC3H18 impact promoter-proximal stalling of RNAPII at pc genes as well as PROMPT and eRNA TUs. (B) ARS2 impacts transcription termination downstream of snRNA, RDH, PROMPT and eRNA TUs as well as inside intron 1 of pc genes. (C) ARS2, ZC3H18 and the RNA exosome cooperate in the decay of 3′extended snRNAs, PROMPTs, eRNAs and RNAs with 3′ends inside first introns of pc genes. As indicated, decay of some species may also occur via direct exosome targeting by the NEXT complex. Note also that ZC3H18 appears dispensable for targeting of RDH gene-derived species. The fact that ARS2 appears to preferentially act on short TUs is indicated at the bottom of the figure. See text for details.
