Qualitative Interview Quotes

Accountability
  • (I liked) the accountability… knowing that somebody else would be checking my steps…

  • It just brought a lot of awareness. I wasn’t really paying attention to it before. Now it’s made it so easy to pay attention. And it makes me accountable.

Support from others
  • [when I was overwhelmed], my husband, knowing that I was in this trial, would say ‘go put on your sneakers and go for a walk’

  • I like the motivational factor of the Fitbit. I like seeing the steps. My son got one too and we compare notes.

Challenging self and measuring progress
  • I would highly recommend it because it is a sense of accomplishment to look at the end of the day and see [the steps I took].

  • I like that the Fitbit tracks my progress. I know that it motivates me. If I click it after work and I notice that I have low steps, I challenge myself… to meet my goal

  • I liked that I was able to compete with myself…that I was able to track and record my progress.

Exercise to cope
  • I learned that I cope with my alcoholism and my stress through exercise…Instead of feeling hopeless and angry, my go-to is now going to the gym or to the park to walk…

  • For Halloween …I was starting to feel really melancholy about the kids being older and it not being any fun any more and I was probably kind of cycling into a little depression. So early in the day I got on the treadmill to boost my mood so I would feel better later.
