Scheme summarizing the main protumoral effects known for galectin-3 in the tumor microenvironment. Galectin-3 has been described to immobilize glycosylated proteins on the surface of T cells28, 30, 31, 32, 33, IFNγ receptor on human fibroblasts and B cells53, and VEGF receptor in human endothelial cells27. In addition, galectin-3 favors collagen deposition by macrophages48 and tumor cell migration54. This figure does not intend to make an exhaustive review about all the effects published for galectin-3 but to highlight the ones that, in our opinion, can be working simultaneously in the tumor microenvironment
