Classification of neural crest-related genes in respect to developmental expression subunits. (A) Thirty-one genes from the NC GRN are classified into four groups depending on their deployment during development, after Betancur et al. (2010): Genes responsible for early induction of future NC (1), genes defining the NPB that lines the neural plate before neurulation (2), specifiers of the NC itself as well as regulators of their migration (3), and genes determining the fate of migrated multipotent NC cells (4). (B) Genes in this study sorted by developmental subunit. Five housekeeping genes (group C) were added to the analyses as a control group. (C) Regulatory connections between network genes without distinction regarding directionality and mode of interaction.
