Individuals were allocated to a holding tank with two other conspecifics for two weeks. Each testing day, three groups were tested where fish remained with those they had been sharing a tank with (familiar treatment). The other three groups had the individuals swapped so that none of the fish had encountered each other previously (unfamiliar treatment). Forty-two groups were tested in total, 21 of each treatment.
