Five-hundred and six adolescents were invited to participate in the study. Of these, 317 were excluded, 93 because they did not provide consent and 224 because they had a body mass index below the 85th percentile. A total of 189 adolescents met all inclusion/exclusion criteria and were randomized to receive the physical education class intervention with compañeros (94 participants) or without compañeros (95 participants). Four participants in the compañeros condition and 14 participants in the condition without compañeros were unavailable for assessment at 6 months. At 12 months, 19 participants from the compañeros condition and 12 participants from the condition without compañeros were unavailable for assessment. Therefore, 71 participants from the condition with compañeros and 69 participants from the condition without compañeros were available for both 6-month and 12- month assessments and were included in the final analysis.
