Meta-analysis of GAS survival in whole blood following emm deletion. The mean average % survival relative to that of the wild type is shown for several Δemm mutants of different M types, based on the findings of several other investigators (20–24). Each study used whole human blood and logarithmic-phase GAS rotated for 3 h at 37°C, although inoculum doses may have differed slightly; the % survival calculations were made in almost exactly the same way as that described for the Alab49 (emm53) strain from this report.
