Low dose of apelin-36, but not apelin-13, reduces infarct volume in rats with ischemic stroke. (A) The rats were subjected to a sham procedure or 2 h middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) followed by 24 h of reperfusion (I/R). Apelin-36 or vehicle was administrated at 2 h after MCAO procedure. The brain was freshly cut into 2 mm slices and subjected to triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining. The infarct tissue was illustrated by the complete loss of TTC staining (white color) and the viable tissue was stained in red color. (B) Quantification of infarct volume.
