Table 1.

Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of caprylic acid, polygalacturonic acid, and combinations.

MIC PG alone MIC CAP alone MIC PG + CAP
MRSA 0.5% 0.03% 0.25/0.01%
Ps. aerguinosa 0.75% >0.05% 0.25/0.05%
C. albicans >1% >0.05% 0.25/0.01%
E. coli 1% >0.05% 0.75/0.02%
0.5/0.04%
S. enteridits >1% >0.05% 0.75/0.01%
0.5/0.02%

MICs were determined by microbroth dilutions in accordance with CSLI (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute) M07 guidelines. Pathogens were exposed to a range of dilutions of PG (0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1%), independently and in combinations (checkerboard) with a range of dilutions of CAP (0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, and 0.05%). MIC was determined by visual scoring for growth (“>” denotes greater than).
