Diagnostic criteria of acute retinal necrosis by the American Uveitis Society

Clinical characteristics that must be seen Characteristics that support but are not required for diagnosis
  • One or more focus of retinal necrosis with discrete borders located in the peripheral retina (primarily involving the area adjacent to, or outside of, the major temporal vascular arcades).

  • Rapid progression of disease (advancement of lesion borders or development of new foci of necrosis) if antiviral therapy is not given

  • Circumferential spread of disease

  • Evidence of occlusive vasculopathy with arteriolar involvement

  • Prominent inflammatory reaction in the vitreous and anterior chambers

  • Optic neuropathy/atrophy

  • Scleritis

  • Pain
