Exemplary registration results for the hand images (see Fig. 1). We report representative results from Tab. 2. The first three rows show results for plain smoothness regularization (γ = 0; first and second row: H²-regularization; third row: H¹-regularization) for different choices of β_v (top row: β_v = 1E−3; second row: β_v = 1E−4; third row: β_v = 1E−2). The two rows from the bottom show results for a model with local adaptive compression (H¹-regularization; γ = 1) for β_v = 1E−2 and different choices for β_w (bottom row: β₂ = 1E−4; second row from the bottom: β_w = 1E−3). We show (from left to right) (i) the residual differences after registration, (ii) a map of the determinant of the deformation gradient (the values are reported in Tab. 2; the color map is explained in §D of the appendix), (iii) the deformed template image m₁ with a grid in overlay, and (iv) a close up of the latter for a particular area of interest (as identified by the inset in the images).
