Figure 5

Effects of ghrelin administration on serum glucose homeostasis and insulin levels in R6/2 mice. Serum levels of glucose and insulin were measured at different time points (0, 90 s, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 75 min). A significant increase in basal glucose levels (a) and a significant decrease in basal insulin levels (b) were observed in 14-weeks old R6/2 mice compared with WT. Levels of glucose over time were increased in R6/2 mice (c), while insulin secretion was decreased (d). Ghrelin administration had a beneficial effect on insulin secretion in R6/2 mice (e), however the effect did not reach significance. Data represent mean ± SEM, WT vehicle, n = 9; R6/2 vehicle, n = 9; R6/2 ghrelin, n = 10. Statistical significance was determined by 2-way ANOVA with Bonferroni post hoc test for multiple comparisons. *p< 0.05, **p < 0.01, ***p < 0.001, ****p < 0.0001.
