Average parathyroid gland speckle contrast grouped according to surgeon’s assessment. Speckle contrast is significantly lower (p < 0.0001) for vascularized glands (a). Of the compromised glands only 5 required transplantation, however no significant difference was observed between this sub-group and the compromised glands that were left in place (b). Classifying parathyroid glands based on average speckle contrast generated an ROC curve with an area under the curve of 0.935, and an optimum point with sensitivity and specificity of 92.6% and 90.6% respectively (c).
