Comparison of the expression levels of the GABAA receptor subunit α1 (GABAAR α1) in young adult and old rats. The top panel shows typical western blotting results obtained for young rats (YR1, YR2, YR3) and old rats (OR1, OR2, OR3) using GABAAR α1 and GAPDH antibodies (see also the full-length blots presented in Supplementary Figure 3). The bottom panel shows the mean optical density (OD) of the band corresponding to GABAAR α1 normalized to the OD of the band corresponding to GAPDH in the two age groups. The mean normalized OD value of GABAAR α1 in old rats (0.308 ± 0.127) was significantly smaller than that in young rats (0.513 ± 0.099) (two-tailed t-test, p = 0.011).
