Thiostrepton effect on paracellular tracer permeability. Caco-2 cell monolayers were treated with 100 µM thiostrepton or left untreated (control) and then apically incubated with sulfo-NHS-SS-biotin (606.7 Da; red) and counterstained with anti-ZO-1 antibody (green; TJ stain) and DAPI (blue; nuclear stain). Scanning of the lateral (z-) axis of the cells showed specific localisation of the biotin signals (red) within intercellular contacts, whereas no biotin permeation was observed in control cells.
