The frequencies of circulating terminally differentiated effector memory CD57+CD28CD8+ T cells (TEMRA) were compared in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), those with stage IV chronic kidney disease (CKD), kidney transplant recipients, and controls with normal kidney function. We observed a significant increase in TEMRA in transplant patients as compared with controls with normal renal function. The frequencies of TEMRA were similar in patients with ESRD, those with stage IV CKD, and kidney transplant patients. CD8+ T-cell subsets were analyzed on peripheral blood samples by flow cytometry as previously reported.44
