Most cells exhibit membrane ruffles characterized as elongated membrane structures protruding from the plane of the membrane and often appearing at the cell periphery (e.g., at the arrows over cell 1). One cell does not contain membrane ruffles in its peripheral plasma membrane region and is identified as a flat cell (cell 2). (B) Fluorescence image of the same position as in A.
