Within the porcine model, several musculoskeletal tissues have been the focus of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine studies. For biomechanics (A), studies on bone, cartilage, and muscle tissues had the highest increases in publications per year. Similarly, for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, studies on cartilage, bone, and muscle have been most frequently published (B). When these search terms were combined, similar trends were found (C) with the highest annual rates in cartilage, bone, and muscle. Data in Figure 1A–C were fit with either an exponential or linear regression, depending on the shape of the data. The impact of studies regarding individual musculoskeletal tissues can be seen through the total citations in each tissue (D), with highest impacts in cartilage, bone, and muscle, followed by tendon/ligament research.
