DSQ, Depression Screening Questionnaire; TCA, tricyclic antidepressants; SSRI, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors; NaSSA, noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressants; SSNRI, selective serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors

*1The physician’s diagnosis is determined from the physician questionnaire (assessment of presence of depression or another mental disorder) and classified as follows: definite = clear-cut depression fulfilling all criteria; subthreshold = clear-cut depression, but not all criteria fulfilled; questionable = not obviously depression (could be another syndrome). The DSQ study diagnosis is determined from the patient questionnaire. The intervention is determined from the physician questionnaire. All interventions on the reference date were included (multiple answers were possible).

*2 Severity as assessed by physician; some data were missing, so the numbers n for the three categories of depression do not add up to the total n.

*3 Severity as determined by means of DSQ
