The experimental procedure of Experiment 1 (top) and Experiment 2 (bottom). The procedure of the build phase was identical for both experiments – participants were instructed to either arrange objects in a consistent or inconsistent fashion. In Experiment 1, a recall phase followed in which participants were instructed to rebuild the environments from the build phase. In Experiment 2, participants had to sequentially search for all objects in the rooms they had built, as well as rooms built by participants in Experiment 1.
