Epigenetic silencing of miR-296 and miR-512 genes in basal type breast cancer cells releases hTERT from miRNA dependent suppression of gene expression. This leads to improved telomerase activity, enhanced telomere maintenance and protects from senescence and apoptosis, key factors that increase the aggressiveness of human breast cancer.
